If you are a family who lives overseas or have an international background then a vintage name can be a wonderful way of bridging the two cultures. Combine it with an Indian middle name of course (Aurelia Tara, Iris Ahana etc) to pay homage to both.

7 Tips From Our Classroom to Help You Choose a Unique Girl Name

A unique name is a wonderful gift, as long as it works in the real world too (at school, on forms, in the playground etc.). That’s what a decade of roll calls has taught us.

  1. Say it out loud loads of times. Call the name across a room as if your daughter is in the park. Say it with all the love and then firmly as you would if she was late for school or not listening to you. If it feels natural in both those contexts then it’s a good one.
  2. Do the one spelling test. Say the name to five friends and ask them to write it down on a piece of paper. If all five of them spell it correctly then the teachers and the other pupils will as well. People these days are very prone to adding an ‘h’ or an ‘a’ or some other letter and that then results in the spelling of the name being wrong on the ID cards and all the other official school records.
  3. Check the initials and nicknames. Write her full name with initials and surname. The children will be very quick to spot odd initials or rhymes so check before they do to avoid any issues.
  4. Choose a meaning that she’ll be proud of. Your daughter is going to be asked “What does your name mean?” quite a few times in quite a few places. A meaning like ‘light’, ‘courage’ or ‘peace’ will be a real confidence booster.
  5. Think about her whole life really rather than just babyhood. A name should work for a baby, a teenager and a working woman so that when that child becomes an adult she doesn’t feel the need to change her name. Ilisha, Kavya and Nitara all work at every stage of life.
  6. Think beyond India. If she’s going to be studying or living overseas then go for a name that’s easy to say in English as well. That’s the way to go either way really. Ira, Tara, Avni and Ahana all travel very well.
  7. Respect the family tradition, of course, but shortlist first. Many families will go down the rashi, nakshatra, or numerology route. Shortlist five names that you love and then check them. Your first choice will always be a name that has a meaning that you will hold in the highest regard for the rest of your life.

From Our Nest: Every year we asked ask our students what their names meant. There was one extremely quiet girl (she didn’t normally speak in class at all) who got up and said her name meant ‘the earth’. From that point on, she was a lot more confident, and she raised her hand quite a bit. A name with meaning gave her something to be proud of and something to tell the class.

Girl Name Trends Parents Love Right Now

A few clear trends are shaping how parents choose unique girl names:

  • Short two syllable names like Ira, Avni and Siya which are easy to say in any language.
  • Nature names inspired by rivers, trees and the sky (Reva, Aranya, Tara etc).
  • Revived classics: old Indian names such as Parul and Ketki and the classic international names Hazel and Florence all sound absolutely contemporary again.
  • Meaning first: parents are increasingly choosing a name for what it means (courage, peace, light etc) rather than just for how it sounds.

Pairing a Unique Name With Your Surname and Siblings

A good first name is generally going to work best with a well balanced surname. A long surname will work well with a short first name (Ira Raghunathan) and a short surname will work well with a long first name (Shambhavi Rao). Just say the full name out loud to check the flow.

If she has siblings then look for names that have a theme rather than being too similar. Nature names (Reva and Arnav for example, ‘river’ and ‘ocean’) or names that start with the same letter will work very well. Avoid names that rhyme as those are very easily confused at school and at home.

Frequently Asked Questions About Unique Girl Names

Names like Tvisha (meaning brightness), Ilisha (queen of the earth), Shambhavi (Goddess Parvati) and Elowen (elm tree) are not names you’d come across in India or indeed anywhere else in the world, yet they’re all very easy to say and very easy to spell. That’s what makes them so unusual.

2. What’s a unique Hindu name for a baby girl?

Try some of the more unusual goddess names (Shambhavi, Sharvani, Aparna, Vaidehi) or some meaningful Sanskrit names (Nitara, Mihika, Anvesha).

Yes, the vintage names (Beatrice, Florence, Hazel etc) are making a come back overseas and the older Indian names (Parul, Ketki etc) are being re-discovered as well.

7. How do I work out whether a unique name is too difficult?

Say it once to three to five friends and ask them to spell it. If they all get it right and it sounds good with your surname then it’s good to go.
